Addressing Sports Injuries, Chronic Pain, Stress and Tension Disorders, Energy Imbalances, Musculoskeletal Movement Dysfunction or Postural Imbalances, & Post Concussion Syndrome

The key to treatment success is being able to ascertain the body’s root dysfunction and greatest restrictions and then address that dysfunction with the appropriate therapy. The other aspect that is critical to healing is addressing the imbalance of the parasympathetic (rest, healing and calming) and sympathetic (flight-flight-stress) branches of the autonomic nervous system. Any kind of injury, trauma, surgery, scar or stress to the body upregulates the sympathetic nervous system. The corresponding increase in cortisol can be directly linked to impairment of the body's immune and digestive systems and internal organ functioning. Often individuals have one muscle group that is overworking (facilitated) and is causing another muscle group to be underactive (inhibited). But unless you address both of these linked conditions together you will never establish a new pattern of movement or function.

The longer a restriction has been in place the more persistent the restriction and the greater the layer of compensations that often result, as the body adapts to remain functional. Often many patterns of compensation need to be unravelled to achieve the desired outcome. Where you are feeling pain and discomfort may be the compensation rather than the root problem. This is why you can treat the area of pain with certain treatment modalities and receive temporary comfort, but if the root problem is not addressed the pain and tension will return along with the increased stress response.

Energetic Balance in the meridians based on the principles of acupuncture is also key to relieving many of your symptoms and supporting the structural corrections. Combining meridian balancing with neuromyofascial reorganization results in pain that can be better controlled and improved outcomes while balancing the whole body. This method allows the body to naturally release tension, reduce pain, decrease stress and restore overall health and well-being. Then the body is better able to accept any further osteopathic techniques that may be required to address specific pathologies.

Integrated Body Therapy

Integrated Body Therapy is a combination of therapies derived in part from the whole body approach from the Philosophy of Chinese Medicine, the Principles of Traditional Acupuncture, Sports Medicine Acupuncture® and both classical and emerging osteopathic and facial techniques. Micro Point Stimulation (E-stim) is one of the techniques that can offer the benefits of Acupuncture  without the use of needles. This microcurrent simulation is non-invasive, and non-painful. This stimulation differs from TENS (commonly used in physical therapy) which uses alternating current to block pain signals. Micro Point Stimulation Therapy is actually healing because it uses the natural direct current or bioelectricity that we commonly call "Qi" (energy) in Chinese Medicine that is inherent in our own bodies.

Integrated Body Therapy has evolved from the adoption of various treatment techniques, not only from my own discoveries of what has or has not worked for myself, but also what has helped my clients most. Manual techniques in addition to acupuncture, sports medicine acupuncture, the use of muscle motor points and electro-acupuncture and/or Micro Point Stimulation have been integrated into a unique blend that offers encouraging results with re-occurring musculoskeletal pain and conditions that have not responded well to traditional therapies.

Integrated Body Therapy targets the root dysfunction rather than continually chasing your pain symptoms without results. Also, many modalities only address certain components in the body, but Integrated Body Therapy addresses the whole body from the musculoskeletal system, fascial trains, bones and joints, the craniosacral system, the organs, central nervous system. Also the flow of energy in the acupuncture meridians can be balanced with both needle andnon-needle acupuncture techniques such as E-Stim, Laser or Tuina (Chinese Bodywork Therapy).

Sports Medicine Acupuncture ® integrates techniques from Western Sports Medicine, the use of muscle motor points and traditional acupuncture principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to assess and treat injuries, eliminate pain and movement dysfunction. In addition to determining meridian and musculo-tendonal pathway pathologies manual muscle testing (Neurokinetic Therapy) is used to determine overacting and underacting muscle groups to determine the appropriate corrective treatment and post corrective exercises.

Vital Balance Therapy uses functional anatomy, manual muscle testing, myofascial length testing, orthopedic examinations, and palpation to correctly identify the root cause of the pain, dysfunction and postural imbalances. A determination of the root cause of injury and which muscle groups are facilitated (overactive) and which muscle groups are inhibited (underactive) is the key to positive outcomes. Sports Medicine Acupuncture® can also play a role in the prevention of injuries by increasing mobility and flexibility, correcting muscle imbalance and improving functional movement. This can lead to increased sports performance. www.sportsmedicineacupuncture.ca

 NeuroKinetic Therapy (NKT)

NKT is the application of motor control therapy and functional anatomy. It identifies what muscles are inhibited (not firing) and what muscles are compensating for them. With the use of very specific muscle tests, NKT can detect these imbalances, their weakness and complex compensation. More importantly, the tests cue the motor control center in the brain to make a new connection regarding what muscle group should relax when another group is activated. The imbalances are corrected via various methods including manual therapies, acupuncture and sports medicine acupuncture and a new pattern of function and movement is established which the client locks in with corrective exercises.

The AcuGraph Digital Meridian Imaging system is a computerised tool used to analyze and document the energetic status of the acupuncture meridians versus relying on symptomology. This system clearly identifies energy imbalances  and indicates functional changes in the body. The software displays these imbalances for you to visually see the energetic status of the meridians and the related organs and to allow for a more accurate selection of acupuncture points and meridians to treat theses imbalances.

Micro Point Stimulation - Neurostim (Non-Needle Acupuncture)

Micro Point Stimulation Therapy applies concentrated DC microcurrent to produce an "acupuncture" response that releases muscle tissue that impinges nerves and causes joint articulations. This action permits increased reinnervation of affected neural pathways to allow pain levels to decrease often instantaneously and can calm the nervous system and release endorphins, the body's natural pain killers and to help fight chronic pain. As a result, the benefits of acupuncture can be received without the use of needles.

 Meridian BalancingMeridian BalancingMeridian Balancing

Acupuncture meridians are invisible energy pathways in your body that have been used therapeutically for over 5000 years. These meridians conduct energy, or Qi in and around all the parts of your body. Blocked or imbalanced energy (QI) flow can affect surrounding structures and the organs related to those meridians. Based on the Five Elements in Chinese Medical Theory certain emotions are also associated with specific organs and therefore, the emotions may also be disturbed due to imbalance. In the same way soft tissue can be untangled, we can unwind the meridians to give them space to release blocked energy (QI) and help balance that pathway.

Following assessment through the use of the AcuGraph Digital Imaging, acupoint treatment selection can restore energetic balance and proper energy flow to the meridians with or without the use of acupuncture needles (micro point stimulation). This process allows your body to function optimally and return to health naturally. www.meridianbalancing.ca

Concussion Recovery - Micro Point Stimulation Therapy

An evidenced based approach to the treatment of post concussion syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. Integrating science and neurology with eastern medicine to “unwind” the body and produce real time functional outcomes that are impossible to produce using other modalities and therapeutic approaches. Using special techniques from Micro Point Stimulation Therapy, this approach heals concussions from the inside out and integrates this change through the rest of the body while deregulating the sympathetic nervous system, eliminating pain, decreasing stress and addressing symptoms such as headaches, balance, tinnitus, confusions, nausea, weakness, fatigue and vision problems. www.concussionrecoverytherapy.ca

Scar and Adhesion Release Therapy - Micro Point Stimulation Therapy

Scars and trauma have a profound effect on the body including autonomic nervous system imbalance. They create adhesions inside the body which can strain and pull fascia and reduce muscle and organ performance and produce pain and dysfunction. Scars block blood circulation and energetic flows through the meridian system. Using special techniques from Micro Point Stimulation Therapy these adhesions can be released in addition to dramatically improving the actual appearance of the scar tissue. (Both recent and old surgical and traumatic scars).

Laser Acupuncture

Laser Acupuncture applies low-level laser to stimulate the movement of energy in the acupuncture meridians via acupuncture points to help regenerate cells, decrease pain, reduce inflammation and improve circulation and can also be used to clear scar tissue blockages and adhesions. The laser can be used to activate points and balance the meridians in the same way as acupuncture needles or micro point stimulation and provides another alternative for individuals with a phobia of needles, or painful acupoint insertions.

Celluma LED low level light therapy uses deeply penetrating wavelengths which are absorbed by photoacceptors in the mitrochnodria. This process increased the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) - the fuel that drives all cells. This boost of cellular energy results in a cascade of metabolic events leading to an increase in micro-circulation, tissue repair and decrease in inflammation and pain.

Craniosacral Therapy and Visceral Manipulation

This is a gentle, non-invasive touch therapy that addresses the body, the head and nervous system through the Craniosacral system from an osteopathic view. The cranial rhythm produced by the movement of the cerebrospinal fluid as it pulsates around the brain and up and down the spine within the membranes can be felt throughout the body and is a monitor of our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness. This therapy involves assessing imbalances and non-symmetrical structures in the physiological system called the Craniosacral system.

Craniosacral Therapy gently releases restrictions in movement to restore the normal motion to the bones of the head, spinal column and sacrum, membranes, joints, fascia, and other soft tissue and can decrease stress from chronic injuries and help to alleviate pain. It is a very gentle physical touch that allows the body to release restrictions to improve the central nervous system.

Strains in the connective tissue of the viscera can result from surgical scars, adhesions, illness, posture or injury. Tension patterns form through the fascial network deep within the body, creating a cascade of effects in which the body will have to compensate. This creates fixed, abnormal points of tension that the body must move around, and this chronic irritation gives way to functional and structural problems. Visceral Manipulation involves soft touch to encourage the normal mobility, tone and motion of the viscera and their connective tissues. These gentle manipulations can potentially improve the functioning of individual organs, the systems the organs function within, and the structural integrity of the entire body.
