When the Usual Approach Isn't Working

Athletes are used to pushing through. You have tried physio, massage, rest, and the standard rehab protocols. Some things improved. Others keep coming back. The same shoulder. The same knee. The same restriction that shows up every season right when you need to be at your best.

The frustrating part is that most of those treatments are addressing the symptom, not the source. A tight muscle gets released, a joint gets mobilized, and two weeks later you are back where you started. That cycle happens when the treatment is targeting what the body is doing without asking why it is doing it.

For a lot of athletes, the missing piece is the nervous system.

What a Sports Osteopath Does Differently

Manual osteopathy works with the relationship between the body's structure, its fluid systems, and its nervous system. A sports osteopath applies that framework specifically to athletic presentations: the compensation patterns that develop after injury, the movement restrictions that limit output, and the protective tension the nervous system holds onto long after the original problem has healed.

At Vital Balance Therapy in Coquitlam, sports osteopathy is integrated with Neurokinetic Therapy and the Square 1 System, two brain-based assessment tools that identify why the body is compensating, not just where. How Colin Harris Works with Athletes

Colin Harris, DOMP, DTCM, R.Ac., C.SMA, is BC's only certified Square 1 System practitioner and one of approximately six Certified Sports Medicine Acupuncturists in the province. His background includes personal training alongside his clinical credentials, which means he can work directly with athletes' existing coaches and trainers to coordinate assessment findings with training programs.

His approach with athletes covers two distinct phases: clearing the compensation patterns and protective restrictions that are limiting performance or causing recurring injury, then shifting to genuine performance optimization once the body is moving freely. Athletes he has worked with include NHL professionals across multiple teams and competitive athletes in judo and other sports.

Neuro-Based Assessment

The first session begins with a comprehensive assessment using NKT muscle testing, movement screens, and Square 1 System sensory input evaluation to map where the nervous system is generating restriction or compensation.

Integrated Treatment

Sessions draw on manual osteopathy, NKT corrections, Sports Medicine Acupuncture motor points, and Square 1 System protocols as indicated. Sessions are typically 60 minutes.

Coordination and Progression

Colin works alongside your existing training program, prescribing specific exercises for your coach or trainer based on what the assessment reveals. Session frequency is adjusted based on your training schedule and goals.

What Athletes Work Toward

Resolving Recurring Injuries
Addressing the neurological compensation pattern driving a recurring injury, not just the site of pain, breaks the cycle that physio and massage alone haven't been able to stop.

Improved Strength and Range of Motion
When the brain's protective response is resolved, inhibited muscles recruit fully and protective tension releases. Athletes typically notice meaningful changes in output and mobility within the first few sessions.

Performance Work Alongside Rehab
For athletes who are not injured but want to move better and perform at a higher ceiling, the same neuro-based assessment identifies the constraints holding performance back.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Many athletes come to Vital Balance Therapy specifically for performance work rather than injury treatment. The neuro-based assessment is equally effective for identifying movement inefficiencies and nervous system constraints that are limiting performance in a healthy athlete.

Sports physio typically focuses on structural rehabilitation: strengthening, mobility, and load management. This approach works upstream, at the level of the neurological patterns driving the structural problem. The two can complement each other well, and Colin regularly coordinates with athletes' existing physio and training teams.

Colin has worked with athletes across hockey, judo, rugby, soccer, and other field and court sports. The nervous system assessment approach is not sport-specific. It addresses the movement and compensation patterns that affect performance in any athletic context.

This depends on the complexity of your presentation and your goals. Athletes addressing a specific recurring injury often see meaningful changes within two to four sessions. Athletes working on sustained performance optimization or coming in during an active training season typically work with Colin over several weeks or throughout a season.
